What Didn’t You Learn Today?

What did you learn today?

It’s a question we often ask to end a lesson. It’s meant as a prompt for reflection. It’s used as a bridge to the next lesson. It asks our students to state something known.

But what if we have it all wrong?

What if we are asking the wrong question?

Maybe we should flip it.

Let’s make a minor adjustment to the question that creates a major shift in thinking.

What didn’t you learn today?

Now it’s not only a bridge to the next lesson, but a bridge beyond any lesson.

It’s a connection to passion.

It delves into the unknown.

It’s a starting point to keep learning.

Let’s encourage extended learning instead of limiting it to a singular moment.

What did you learn today?

Sorry.

What didn’t you learn today?
