Staff Meeting Syndrome

I believe that some educators are suffering from Staff Meeting Syndrome.

Defined, SMS is a reluctance to actively and meaningfully participate in professional learning opportunities due to being subjected to years of Bad PD.

Even when presented with quality professional learning opportunities, those suffering tend to shy away, keep quiet, roll their eyes, or simply tune out.

While it may seem like there is no help for those suffering, the only help we can offer is to continue planning and sharing meaningful PD opportunities with them.

Let’s continue to expand our definition of what’s possible with professional development. When you feel like you’ve come in contact with someone suffering from SMS, help them.

Help them to engage meaningfully…

To participate fully…

To #GoROGUE if need be…

But most of all, to realize that PD participants don’t need to suffer any longer.
