1000 Words of Summer

A little while ago, I stumbled across the book 1000 Words: A Writer’s Guide to Staying Creative, Focused, and Productive All Year Round by Jami Attenberg. The book is based off of the literary movement started by Attenberg in which she and a friend decided to write a thousand words a day for two straight weeks.

Now, a thousand words may seem like a lot to write each day but it’s really not. Consider that Stephen King writes about 2,000 words per day, Michael Crichton wrote about 10,000 words per day, and so far, I’ve written about one hundred words. Only nine hundred more to go.

As I am in the process of writing a new book, I decided to join the #1000WordsOfSummer Challenge. Writers around the world will start on June 1st, and for two weeks, write a thousand words a day. If you’ve ever thought about writing a book, you’d be well on your way with around 14,000 words completed.

I started a little early with the challenge this weekend, and pumped out 1200 words in about 25 minutes on Saturday, and finished a little more than a thousand on Sunday. It took me about forty minutes on the second day. Sometimes the words flow more quickly.

I would encourage all of you who want to write to join in the challenge. Writing is a cathartic experience. It helps you to think through things and get your thoughts out on paper. Get started on June 1st.

What will your #1000WordsOfSummer lead to?
