As I write this, there are 34 days left in the school year. Students in our building will spend 21 of the remaining days taking standardized tests.
The question I’d like to pose is:
Have high stakes test helped to improve our schools?
It’s an awful lot of time to be engaged in something that year after year doesn’t seem to be helping our students.
We’ve been sold on the idea that the data gathered from these tests will help our students improve. We should be able to use the data to guide instruction and help support students.
These promises were made when I started teaching twenty years ago, and I continue to hear them used to defend the ongoing debacle that is standardized testing.
Again, have high stakes tests helped to improve our schools?
We all know the answer, and yet we continue with the charade.
