We tend to think
that artists,
or people in creative fields,
have an idea
and then do work
to express that idea.
In reality,
artists,
and people in creative fields
do work (lots of work)
and then get ideas
or probably more likely,
find (or stumble upon) ideas
that appear in
the work.
So here are the rules
For creating meaningful work:
- Do lots and lots and lots and lots of work.
- Search for ideas that get you excited within that work.
- Do lots and lots and lots and lots of work around those ideas.
- Search for more ideas that get you excited within that work.
- Repeat again and again and again and again.
- Oh, and explore new things.
For many students,
teaching them to,
or helping them to,
do lots and lots and lots of and lots of work
will serve them better
then worrying about
whether their work is good or bad.*
Quantity leads to quality.
Creating creates creativity.
*Historically, humans are terrible at judging new and different ideas.
