As an administrator for several years, I have sat through my fair share of interviews on both sides of the table. I once sat through well over a hundred interviews in a single summer to fill several open teaching positions. After a while, all of the teaching candidates, who are trying to distinguish themselves, start to blend together.
Through all of the interviews over the years, I’ve learned a few things. This week, I’ll share some interview tips. Consider this practical advice if you are searching for or interviewing for a teaching position right now.
Find the better fit. While landing a job is important, it’s more important that the school is a fit for you, just as you are a fit for the school. If you are trying to land your first teaching position, you may be tempted to take the first offer, but give careful consideration. While you may not be able to find the absolutely perfect fit, you may be able to find a better fit.
Make sure you feel comfortable with those interviewing you. Ask questions. Not pre-planned stock questions that you are supposed to ask (ex – What type of Professional Development do you offer?), but genuine questions that help you get a better sense of the school environment that you will be working in. What is the school climate like? How is discipline handled by teachers and administrators? What kind of support does the building administrator provide to new teachers aside from what the district is doing?
There may come a time when you sit through an interview, knowing after a few minutes that this isn’t the right fit for you. Don’t be afraid to say no if you realize this. Hold out for a better fit!
