My son asked me a simple question this morning:
“Do Principals have lunch?”
I laughed first, then asked what he meant.
He clarified, “how long is your lunch?”
I simply explained that I didn’t have a set time for lunch.
Then I thought more about it.
Some days, I scarf down my lunch while sitting at my desk and answering emails. It’s usually productive.
Some days, I’ll eat lunch with students in my office. It could be because a kid did something wonderful or because he or she made a poor decision. Either way, it’s a great way to build relationships.
Some days, I eat my lunch at 4:00pm once everyone is gone for the day. Those days are not so great.
Some days, I’ll eat dinner.
And I realize as I write this, it sounds like I’m advocating for educator as martyr, but I’m not.
Being so busy that I’m not eating lunch isn’t a good thing.
And I realize that I need to practice and advocate for self-care. I need to take care of myself first before I can take care of anyone else.
So from now on, I’m going to try to do a better job of practicing self care. We all should try to do a better job of taking care of ourselves first.
