Legend has it that upon landing in the new world, Hernan Cortes ordered his men to burn their ships. No retreat, no turning back. They were all in.
There is a powerful lesson here about the necessity of committing to commitment.
We commit to new curriculums, to new professional development initiatives, to all sorts of things in education. But, do we ever truly commit? Have we ever burned the boats and left ourselves with no other way than to succeed?
We need to make a commitment commitment.
Burning the boats doesn’t mean that we need to be reckless. We just need to be bold and unwavering in our commitment to being better. It’s commitment to the process when things fall apart and seeing through the mission. It’s commitment to trying and trying again. It’s commitment to collaborating, sharing, and talking it through.
It’s commitment to commitment.
