Art Education is not about Learning to Draw
Art can help those who learn differently, learn.
Art can help those who struggle to share their voice, speak.
This is what great art education is about.
Art education is not about:
learning to draw,
color theory,
the formal elements,
techniques,
skill or talent,
or the annual art show.
Art(s) education is about helping all students to
explore, comprehend and communicate their human experience.
There is no correct way to do this.
When art educators focus too much on the things listed above,
it’s easy to dismiss those who don’t fit the traditional mold.
Dismissal shuns those who learn differently.
Dismissal quiets the voices attempting to speak.
Celebrate those who learn differently,
Celebrate those new, developing voices.
Celebrate generously.
This is the Art Spirit.
