His Greatest Lesson

I walked out of my classroom and there he was lying on the floor.

He was listening to the kids read their stories.

He was engaged and so were they.

It was early in the school year as I recall and this was one of my first lessons.

The lesson: Be present and visible.

Interact with the students every day.

Start the day by greeting kids as they enter the building.

Be there when they are leaving for the day.

Be present and visible.

The playground.

The lunch room.

And most importantly, the classrooms.

Dan taught me a great deal.

But this was his greatest lesson.

Be present and visible.

Always.
