Doing vs Trying

Just as with students,

I think a good mindset for educators

is one where they are going to

TRY things, not DO things.

Doing something implies

that it is going to work.

Trying something recognizes

that it might not work.

If something doesn’t work

after we say,

“I am going to do this,”

when it doesn’t work

it is easy to feel like a failure.

Failure is often final

(At least in our heads).

It’s embarrassing and tends to

cut the conversation short.

If something doesn’t work

after we say,

“I am going to try this,”

when it doesn’t work

it leaves room to reflect,

to grow, and to talk.

Most importantly,

it leaves room to try again.
