As the school year typically passes, we usually see students grow. In many cases, they grow in physical stature. We will also see them grow in academic and social ways as well.
In the past year, I’ve heard many bemoan the growth that students are making. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about how much the past year has caused our kids to be behind. The idea is that we have not seen the growth that we would see in a “normal” school year.
And yet, I’ve noticed students who’ve recently returned to school for the first time in nearly a year. I’ve been shocked at their physical stature and how much they have changed in a year. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how some students have matured in the last year, both socially and emotionally.
I’ve seen students who learned to play the guitar or ukulele in the past year.
I’ve seen kids who now love to read and write.
I talked to a six year old who somehow seemed braver because she celebrated her birthday by watching Jaws.
I’ve watched my own children take on new interests and learn things that I don’t think they would have if only in a “normal” year.
Our students have grown tremendously in the past year. It’s been different, for sure. But let’s not forget the fact that our kids have grown.
We’ve all grown this year.
We should all celebrate our growth!
