Is that a spoon?!
Trevor shared the below picture and said: “You’ll understand once you listen.”
Trevor then shared a link to an episode of the Knowledge Project podcast with host Shane Parrish and Author/Educator Matthew Dicks. I listened to the first several minutes of the episode when Matthew began telling a story that stuck with me enough to write about it. I’ve cued up the story in the video below, and I implore you as an educator to watch/listen to the story right now. (The story runs from 6:10 to about 12:25 on the video).
After I heard the story, I sent a text reply to Trevor simply saying “that is an incredible story.”
It’s a simple spoon. But of course, it’s not.
It’s the spoon of power.
It’s a symbol of the power of community.
And the power of empathy.
And the power of connection.
It’s a symbol of how a classroom community when built on a solid foundation of trust and compassion can lift up everyone including the teacher and students.
Is that a spoon?!
Of course, it’s the Spoon of Power. And it symbolizes the power that we all possess as educators to lift others up.
