Space in the Margin

We are often besieged with advice for productivity- using a split screen to accomplish multiple tasks at the same time, finding new ways to avoid procrastination, streamlining email, any number of ways to “hack” life to improve efficiency. Everyone is always trying to accomplish more, faster.

But the most important thing that we may want to do is to leave room in the margin. Many plan every minute of every day, and then fail when emergencies or unplanned events occur that need attention.

Try building in two open blocks of time each day. Don’t schedule anything during that time. Know that the space in the margin is there if you need it, and if you don’t, you can use it to be productive otherwise.
