If you look
at their early work,
it would be easy to dismiss
Vincent van Gogh & Paul Cezanne
as artists.
Their early paintings
and drawings
are clunky and awkward.
It’s surprisingly easy
to point out all things
that are wrong
about this work.
However,
in the early works,
it’s also possible
to see the seeds
of the ideas
that make them
the geniuses
we now see them as.
As teachers,
when we look
at our students’ work,
we can focus
on all the things
that are wrong
or
look for the seeds
we can nurture.
If we want to see
student growth,
it seems
we might be wise
to focus mostly
on the seeds.
