CLOSE READING the SAME play
in order to understand
how to best perform it,
it is not considered
an academic endeavor.

if an ELA class writes essays
about the importance of social justice
it’s considered academic
but…
if the art students or
videography students
create artworks or videos
about social justice,
it is not considered
an academic endeavor.
It’s funny how
if an ELA class reads a historical novel
it’s considered academic
but…
if a dancer choreographs a dance
to music written, in that era,
about the same theme as the historical novel,
it is not considered academic.
The arts are not just about creation.
They are also about comprehension.
The Arts are academic.
